EDUCATIONAL PROJECTS OF CAP
It is an established fact that one poorly educated or not- educated at all, succumbs to the brutal economic trends of today, unable to win an honorable role in the development of family or community, and further adds to the communal disintegration and gives rise to poverty. CAP targets these poor families who are unable to bear educational expenditure of their children. At this centre in Youhana Abad, There are about three hundred poor and deserving students getting free quality educations irrespective of caste, colour, creed and gender.
This educational programme was started in year 2000 in a single rented room initially to coach the pupils of grade 9 and 10(Secondary school), which, by HIS grace, progressed to a small building, housing five rooms in 2004, thus broadening our approach and assistance to yet more students of other grades from 6th to 10th.. It was followed by addition of two more rooms for extra curricular activities and library for the strength of 150 students. By this time qualified and trained teachers had been appointed and the Middle and Secondary school was fully operational and had earned the respect of the community for free and quality education. To further the cause and to enable more families to be the beneficiaries of DIVINE blessing of free education, in January 2006, junior school was launched for basic and primary education in another small building with four rooms. Within weeks it gained the momentum, making it difficult to enroll more students. In September 2006, with DIVINE help, yet another building was rented totaling three with the capacity of 12 class room, two activity halls and two playing grounds for strength of 300 students.
COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOR WOMEN
Youhana Abad is the largest Christian slum of Pakistan, lying in the south eastern outskirts of Lahore and to go to the nearest college requires traveling for around 30-40 kilometers a day. Due to the economic hardship, low school grades, traveling a great distance along with inflated costs involved in getting higher secondary school education, most women abandon the idea of going to college at all; CAP intervened to help overcome these obstacles by starting Community College for Women of this area in September 2005, initially enrolling 15 girls in the discipline of Arts and hiring high credentialed faculty. This project sees a reassuring future as we plan to extend this facility and offer education in the disciplines of Science, Commerce, and Computer Technology.
COMMUNITY HEALTH PROJECT
Economic wretchedness shadows the mortals in all spheres and dimensions. Illiteracy, disease, hunger and unemployment are only few to bemoan in the long list of setbacks.People in the slums are not knowledgeable about health matters and in the absence of awareness and quality medical and health centre, they resort to cheap traditional and un-conventional remedies from quack and self proclaimed herbalists, or go to charmers for a talisman for medical ailments. Poverty is another reason which keeps them from getting expensive medical treatments at city hospitals. CAP has come up with a healthy solution and has a better remedy for the ailments of the community. Since last year, health awareness programme has been started along with distribution of free medicine at frequently held medical around the slums. Dedicated team of medical professionals, including specialist doctors, qualified, community nurses and non-medic volunteers (CAP schools teachers) are available round the clock to extend socio-medical help. The medical team comprises on three doctors, five qualified community nurses, a Para-medic cum van driver, (the van serves the purpose of ferrying medical team as well as the patients). This project has also provided relief to the impoverished community to their utmost satisfaction. In foreseeable future CAP plans to launch a poly clinic, a community paramedical training school and an epidemiological study centre, and rehabilitation centre for special children.
COMPUTER LITERACY CENTRE
To keep abreast with the technological rapture in the era of information technology and to give the community yet another tool for educational and professional advancement. The CAP is of the view to provide assistance and opportunities to the community in any shape and form to enable them to explore all possibilities for respectful earnings. The students at CAP schools are given free computer education, besides many teachers, nurses, and other members of the community have benefited from this initiative. Since 2004, around 200 individuals have been trained by a qualified instructor, to operate computer independently. An IT centre is in offing where professional trainings and courses will be offered to the community to facilitate and enhance job skills.
TABITHA SEWING CENTRE.
This empowerment programme is designed especially for the poor and illiterate women of the slums. Womenfolk make nearly half of the global population and the ratio in Pakistan is 51: 49 males. There are cultural barriers and social discriminations which keep around 80f the women from getting school education, resulting in low literacy levels and unemployment thus keeping them from contributing in personal and communal development. In the absence of literacy and skill, they are left with no choice but to opt for working as laborers at factories or as domestic helpers at wealthy homes where many a times they are falsely charged with thefts and occasionally raped. To address the problems of illiterate weaker gender of our community, the CAP management decided to launch this programme to enhance the skills and earning potentials of the women by offering different trainings in fabric cutting, designing and sewing. This programme was started in two slums by employing two lady instructors. These centres enroll 15 trainees each for a term of one year and all the basic tools and equipments are supplied free during training period. Upon completion of the course, certifications are awarded and a sewing machine is gifted as a gesture of good will and a token of support.
SCHOOL FOR DISABLES.
CAP is also concerned much for special people of the area.In this poverty ridden land mal-nourishing and disease is very common. Especially, during the child hood, they are prone to contract such diseases which lead these children to physical disabilities thus becoming a burden to the impoveshed families. CAP has started a small project for these special children who need our care and love. In this centre there are 10 disable children being taken care by committed team of CAP.
Farzana, herself is a special girl, working in CAP team as instructor and care taker of these children. She is FA.and knows computer very well and also some other trainings.Presently it is a day care centre but in future we need to make it a residential project. We do hope God will send help to make this a good residential project.Much more funds are involved in this project. Please keep this in your prayers and thoughts.
